GoodReads Book Reviews

Fablehaven (Book 1) Fablehaven by Brandon Mull

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
Looking for something to fill the void that good old Harry P. has left behind? Well don't look here. Although I found this a fun read - it is NO Harry Potter, despite all the marketing hype. If, however, you are looking for a quick, lite, fantasy read then this could be for you. Mothers of tween age boys may recognize certain characteristics in the Seth character. Possibly we don't want to be reminded so forcefully that we should always be obediant. Younger readers may enjoy the interesting fantasy and the not-too-intense exciting parts.

I enjoyed this book even more than the first book "Ella Enchanted". I would recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with self image issues (and who hasn't?). It really made me think about how I view myself and what I would do if given the chance to change how I look. This is an easy read geared toward tween or teen aged kids.

Comings and goings

This week has been full of lots of comings and goings. We finished up swim lessons this week, had a T ball game and practice, a dance class, a matinee movie, photo session with Charlie and Mary Ellen, took the swamp cooler off the roof and put in an attic fan.
In addition to these fun and interesting things, "El Destructo" kept Mom busy. Asher can reach the top of the counters, so he pulls things off regularly. OJ, milk, random dishes, knives, scissors etc. Two incidents of particular note: Asher had a touch of the stomach flu, and had to be cleaned from throwing up all over himself on two different occasions. The second was even more interesting, when he comes downstairs to Mom with "that look" (I assume most parents know what I am talking about). Sara asks, "Did you make a mess?" and he shakes his head "yes" (he won't use words, but nods his head, points, and grunts ... but don't be fooled, he knows exactly what you are talking about). Anyway, Sara takes him upstairs and finds that Asher has decided to take a bath on the kitchen floor in cooking oil. Of course, then he proceeds to walk about the house and grabs who knows what all else. She does add that, on the upside, our floor is really shiny now and Asher's skin is very moisturized! Oh well, you either laugh at them or kill them. We have made comment that JJ and Hannah really didn't get into things or do all the little tricks parents talk about -- Asher, on the other hand, is making up for it in spades.

You can't stay mad at him for long - he is so gosh darn cute! Here are photos from swim lessons:

Since we didn't get to go to the cemetary on Memorial Day this year we went up to Brigham after we returned from China. Here are some pics from that day:

Asher really liked the whirly gigs!

Catching Up

We are finally starting to catch up on a few things after the trip. The house isn't put back together completely but then when is it ever?! Mother's Day came and went with out much comment so I had to post my new favorite photo! I am so grateful to be a mom to these kids even though we drive each other nuts at times! I am also grateful to my own mom for the great example of selfless love and devotion that she has always shown me and my siblings and thier families. Lance's mom is also a great example of generosity and love and I am thankful that I get to be her daughter-in-law.Right before we left for the trip Hannah had her preschool graduation. She did awesome! She had memorized her part really well and performed her songs and dances great. She was so cute! I can't believe my baby girl is growing up so fast. Here are some photos of her graduation.

The morning after we returned from China JJ participated in the school dance festival. The forecast called for rain but it held off long enough for all the grades to do thier dances and then started to dump! JJ did awesome with his dance - especially when it was time to breakdance! We are so grateful for all the great teachers at his school who made this year such an fun year. We are especially grateful to JJ's teacher Mrs. McCann who was a wonderful teacher and made JJ feel so special and loved. We made it through a school year with absolutely NO behavior problems. No one but Lance and I fully understand what a big deal that is but needless to say we are extremely proud of JJ and grateful to his teacher, as we know, she made a big difference in JJ's life.

JJ with Mrs. McCann

This week has been swim lessons for all the kids every day so it has been pretty busy. Asher and I are doing parent/child swim lessons and he is loving it - his favorite thing to do is to climb out of the pool on his own and then jump to me in the water. He doesn't mind going completely under the water which is half the battle with swimming at this age. JJ's teacher came up to me on Thursday to tell me that JJ is doing really well in level 2. She has him doing some level 3 skills too! She says that he is her favorite student and is always well behaved and listens really well. This is music to a mom's ears! Hannah has never been very afraid of the water and always done pretty well in swim lessons if she was willing to listen and follow directions. She is still having a bit of a hard time with that but for a 4 year old she is doing pretty good.

JJ started his new level 2 gymnastics class. His class is now an hour and a half and he really works up a sweat! Lance is coaching JJ's T-ball team and had his first game today. It is rather hilarious to watch the kids as they try to remember which way to run and where to throw the ball. It is a great experiance, though, for JJ to be a part of a team.

We are definatly trying to cram as much as we can into this summer! Hope your summer is full of fun and family!
