What's been going on . . .

I haven't been too diligent in keeping up with blog lately. It seems like everybody is pretty much on Facebook so why duplicate things. I am not sure if anyone even checks my blog any more. But just on the off chance that someone out there does, here is what has been going on lately.

Lance: is dealing with lyme disease hysteria and ticks. He has given multiple TV interviews on the subject the last few days. One of which was done on our front lawn (see above). He decided today to get his hair cut to insure that he doesn't have to do another TV interview until his hair is grown out and shaggy again. (that's just the way it seems to go) He has also started coaching Hannah's soccer team again and so when we get a Saturday with nice weather you will find him at Eaglecrest elementary blowing his whistle and reminding the kids to kick the ball not each other. He also just finished up taking Hannah to a RAD Kids class at his work. It is all about self defense and stranger danger. He even got her on TV!

Lance is also involved in the scouting program with our ward and spends the Tuesdays he isn't covering Saratoga Springs City Council for the newspaper, helping out with the deacon age boys.

Sara: is failing miserably at keeping the house clean but has been working hard doing photo shoots with Missy and editing for her Sarey and Mel Photography business. She is trying to get motivated to start working out more. Some days the motivation is there and some days not so much. She is participating in a Card Swap club, Book club, and Page Swap club (she also has a sporadic Movie club!) . These combined with her interest in digital scrapbooking keep her creative juices flowing. Every four weeks she takes a turn hosting a playgroup/preschool for Asher and a few of his ward friends. Her calling as the compassionate service leader in the ward requires bursts of energy and time here and there with the birth of babies, illnesses and funerals never happening on a set schedule. She has been nominated to be the secretary of the PTA for the next school year which should be a great experience. At the moment the majority of her time is used up helping with homework, fixing hair, feeding mouths, tickling and wiping away tears. Which for right now is the the very best thing she could be doing.

JJ: is currently practicing with the school choir and will have a spring concert soon. He is involved in Spring soccer and looking forward to machine pitch baseball. He recently received a Great Behavior award from school and we couldn't be more proud of the fine young man he is becoming. JJ LOVES cub scouts and has been working hard to receive his "Duty to God" award as well as working toward his next scout level. JJ has become a beloved older brother to both Asher and Hannah. He is learning to shoulder the responsibility of being the oldest and demonstrates his love for his siblings frequently. He is doing really well in his school work and loves to read when we can tear him away from his DS. Thankfully we made a rule when he got his DS that had to get his homework and chores done before he could play so he is better than any of the rest of us at getting his work done! He is a really good worker and really enjoys doing things like cleaning the church. He is excited that some of his front teeth are finally coming in.

Hannah: just finished up her RAD Kids course and loved every minute of it. It was great to see her bond more with her Dad through this class. She learned some valuable things about how to stay safe. Nobody better sneak up on her and try to grab her or they might get kicked some place that hurts really bad. Hannah has become a "list person" like her mom. In order to do her chores she has to make a list of the chores and check them off one by one. Hannah is doing well in her schooling and excelling particularly in her neat handwriting and her spelling. She has started up in Spring soccer again and enjoys it but gets upset when she feels like she isn't the star player. We are trying to help her understand what it means to be a team player.

Asher: is growing up way too fast. He enjoys his sunbeam class at church and sits so quietly in sharing time. He is mommy and daddy's biggest helper and loves to be in the middle of whatever we are doing. He adores his brother and sister except when he has just woken up from a nap and then he hates everybody and everything. He is asking lots of interesting questions these days like "does Heavenly Father make cars and dinosaurs?" He is quiet and easy going most of the time and mommy relishes the time she has with him knowing that he will be off to preschool next year and not so much her baby any more. His favorite things include Go Diego Go and Little Einsteins, playing in the sand, tagging along after brother when he goes out side to play, riding his scooter and his bike, cooking with Mommy, fixing with Daddy and playing Hide and Seek with Grandma J. He is truly the sweetest boy ever!

This has been your monthly update.

Ding Dong Whaaa??!!!

Last weekend we went out with some good friends and had a great time gorging on sushi - I was so bloated afterward but it was so good I would go and do it again tomorrow! We laughed so hard about a SNL sketch called Doorbells. I can't stop giggling about it and it is SO dumb! Check it out HERE. Earlier in the week I spent a raucous night with my Book Club girls. We discussed in detail some interesting "talents" that some of us have. It was a night I will not soon forget! (Bubbles: you know it is all your fault!) We hammered out the hosting schedule for the year and I am excited to read the books we have planned although I have read most of them. Here is our book list if anyone far or near wants to read along with us:
Mar. 25-- Jynelle Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
Apr. 22-- Missy Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale
May 27-- Jean undecided
Jun. 24-- Jana bring your favorite kids books to discuss and share
Jul. 22-- Jen The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan
Aug. 26-- Sara A Room With a View by E. M. Forster
Sept. 23-- Jamie Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
Oct. 21-- Shanna Candy Shop Wars by Brandon Mull
Nov. 18-- Michal Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
Dec. 2 -- Missy holiday get-together

On a different note - I received a call from the school to inform me that JJ would be coming home with a black eye a week or so ago. I wasn't sure how to take that info. I was assured that he wasn't in trouble but that they just wanted to let me know so I wasn't so shocked when he walked in the door. Sure enough he had a eye that was nearly swollen shut and on its way to being many bright and shiny colors. He couldn't tell me what happened - he just didn't seem to know. His friend Kynlee said that a herd of first graders were playing Red Rover and all decided to run at once and he was the unlucky one to be in their path and get plowed over. Still not sure we are getting the full story but the long and short of it is he had a shiner for a good week. He has finally started loosing some of his baby teeth so he looks pretty funny right now and he has a whistle when he talks!

We have been having some struggles with Hannah this year. She has always been pretty easy going but she has gotten two pink slips this year for pushing people who are bothering her. Both times it has been kids who don't get the idea of personal space - as my niece Mary would say - they are "close talkers". Rather than asking a teacher for help Hannah takes matters into her own hands and gives them a good shove. Of course then she gets in trouble and when the teachers ask what happened she freely admits that she pushed the other kid - she doesn't try to give excuses, just owns up to it and doesn't bother explaining to the teacher what happened. I have been able to piece together what happened both times by talking to her, the teacher and the other kids who witnessed the incidents go down. It is frustrating because I want her to stand up for herself and not always go running tattling to the teacher but I don't want her to get in trouble for pushing either. Strangely enough JJ has NEVER gotten a pink slip! Hopefully with time Hannah will learn to ask for help when she needs it and use her words instead of her hands to get her point across. I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to help in her class on a regular basis so that I can get to know the other kids better. She has nearly 30 kids in her kindergarten class so although she has an experienced teacher that I think very highly of, there are just too many kids for one person to handle all the time.

Now on to Asher. He is such a sweet boy! He loves to help anyone with just about anything. He has a wonderful relationship with both JJ and Hannah. They are his best friends. That can pose some challenges though - he is the typical baby of the family. He is very used to this siblings helping him do things so he doesn't always want to do things on his own. He is very comfortable with just playing with them so he has a hard time making new friends. He is a sunbeam now and has done really well adjusting to primary. We haven't had a peep out of him about going! He still struggles with his speech. Some people have a tough time understanding him - although we don't (most of the time). I have been working with him on recognizing the alphabet letters and numbers. He can count to 12 perfectly.Right now he is obsessed with watching Go Diego Go. That is all he will watch. Thank goodness for a DVR!

Speaking of our DVR - I LOVE IT! It is so great to be able to watch something good after the kids go to bed.

So what's on my DVR?

Lark Rise to Candleford (a great PBS series -love love love it)
Parks and Recreation (Amy Poeler is great! This show reminds me so much of Lance's work!)
Castle (gotta have a fun mystery- with lots of sassy repartee)
Scrapbook Memories (this one is on the BYU channel - gotta get my daily dose of scrapbooking)
Go Diego Go (for Asher- see above)
Star Wars the Clone Wars (for Lance and JJ)
Pokemon (for the kids)
Angelina Ballerina (for Hannah)

So what are watching these days? I love hearing what people are into. Send suggestions my way!
